Among the refined works of Goryeo celadon, the Incense Burner with a Qilin-shaped Lid stands out for its elegant fusion of mythology and craftsmanship.
Created during the Goryeo Dynasty (12th century), this vessel was used in Buddhist rituals and elite cultural settings where incense symbolized purification and spiritual elevation.
Perched atop the lid is a Qilin (Kirin) — a mythical creature often translated as a “giraffe,” but in truth a symbol of peace, virtue, and auspicious beginnings.
Its presence transforms the incense burner into more than a vessel —

The body of the incense burner is formed from fine celadon clay and coated with the iconic jade-green glaze (bisaek).
The rounded bowl is balanced upon a stable foot, while the lid is pierced to allow incense smoke to flow outward in gentle streams.
The Qilin atop the lid is sculpted with delicate precision —
its curved body, lifted head, and poised stance conveying both dignity and grace.
The glaze gathers softly around the contours, enhancing depth and creating subtle variations in color that resemble polished jade.
