Celadon Incense Burner with Giraffe-shaped Lid (Qilin)
(Goryeo Dynasty)
🏯 1. A Mythical Guardian of Fragrance
Among the refined works of Goryeo celadon, the Incense Burner with a Qilin-shaped Lid stands out for its elegant fusion of mythology and craftsmanship.
Created during the Goryeo Dynasty (12th century), this vessel was used in Buddhist rituals and elite cultural settings where incense symbolized purification and spiritual elevation.
Perched atop the lid is a Qilin (Kirin) — a mythical creature often translated as a “giraffe,” but in truth a symbol of peace, virtue, and auspicious beginnings.
Its presence transforms the incense burner into more than a vessel —
it becomes a guardian of sacred space.
🪨 2. Craftsmanship and Form
The body of the incense burner is formed from fine celadon clay and coated with the iconic jade-green glaze (bisaek).
The rounded bowl is balanced upon a stable foot, while the lid is pierced to allow incense smoke to flow outward in gentle streams.
The Qilin atop the lid is sculpted with delicate precision —
its curved body, lifted head, and poised stance conveying both dignity and grace.
The glaze gathers softly around the contours, enhancing depth and creating subtle variations in color that resemble polished jade.
This harmony of form and finish reflects the pinnacle of Goryeo ceramic artistry.
🌄 3. Symbolism of the Qilin
In East Asian tradition, the Qilin appears only in times of peace and wise governance.
It is a creature of benevolence, said to walk without harming even a blade of grass.
Placed upon an incense burner, the Qilin becomes a symbol of pure intention and spiritual protection.
As incense smoke rises beneath it, the scene evokes a deeper image —
virtue guiding the ascent of prayer toward the heavens.
The object thus becomes a miniature world where
myth, morality, and ritual unite.
🌿 4. Preservation and Cultural Legacy
The Celadon Incense Burner with Qilin-shaped Lid is regarded as one of the most imaginative and technically refined works of Goryeo ceramics.
Designated National Treasure No. 66, it demonstrates how Korean artisans transformed everyday ritual objects into carriers of profound symbolic meaning.
Even today, it remains a quiet yet powerful presence —
a reminder that beauty, when shaped by intention,
can carry both elegance and wisdom across centuries.
💬 5. A Warm Reflection
“Upon this vessel stands a creature of peace.
As fragrance rises, so does the heart — guided not by force, but by gentleness and grace.”
