“The Camellia Blossoms on the Road to the Afterlife”
(저승길에 핀 동백꽃 · Jeoseunggil-e Pin Dongbaekkkot)

🕰️ 1. The Story

Long ago, in a small village nestled between the mountains and the sea, there lived an elderly woman named Hae-wol. She was known for her gentle smile and her quiet habit of planting camellia trees wherever she found lonely paths.

When people asked why, she would simply reply,

“No traveler should walk without hope.”

Years passed, and Hae-wol grew old. One peaceful winter morning, she closed her eyes for the last time, surrounded by the warmth of her family.

As her spirit awakened, she found herself standing on a long, misty road.

The elders had often called it the Road to the Afterlife.

It stretched endlessly beneath a silver sky, silent except for the soft sound of footsteps.

Though she felt no fear, the path seemed lonely.

Then, to her surprise, she noticed a single camellia flower blooming beside the road.

A little farther ahead...

Another.

Then another.

Soon, brilliant red blossoms lined both sides of the path, glowing warmly against the pale mist.

Hae-wol smiled.

“These flowers...”

A gentle voice answered from the wind,

“Do you remember planting them?”

She looked around in wonder.

The flowers she had planted throughout her lifetime had become blossoms along this sacred road.

Each act of kindness had taken root beyond the human world.

As she continued walking, she met other weary souls.

Some looked frightened.

Some were lost.

Others wept quietly.

Hae-wol gently picked a camellia blossom and handed it to a trembling child.

Immediately, the child's fear disappeared.

The flower glowed softly, lighting the path ahead.

Soon, she began giving blossoms to every soul she met.

With every flower she shared, the road grew brighter.

By the time she reached the end of the path, it no longer looked lonely.

It had become a beautiful avenue of blooming camellias, filled with warmth and quiet peace.

Waiting there stood an old guardian of the spirit world.

He bowed respectfully.

“Few arrive with empty hands.”

Hae-wol looked down.

Only then did she realize...

She had carried nothing except the kindness she had given during her life.

The guardian smiled.

“That is the greatest gift any soul can bring.”

As the gates of the heavenly world slowly opened, countless camellia petals drifted through the air like crimson snow.

And even today, people in southern Korea say that when the first camellias bloom in winter, they remind us that every act of kindness continues blooming—even beyond this life.
